Remote locations

SolarGen

A major barrier to the introduction of solar to remote locations is the cost of installation by skilled contractors.

There is the labour cost which has to be calculated over a number of days, as well as the travel costs to the site and back.

Optimised Power Solutions Ltd., addressed this challenge and opened up a new market, by manufacturing, assembling and commissioning the equipment in a factory.

Once tested, the equipment is dismantled and shipped to site, where someone with basic skills can assemble the unit.  The end user thus maximises his investment on technology and not on an expensive non-recoverable logistic exercise.

This solar generator aims to provide clean, reliable and affordable energy to:

  • Remotely located clinics for – lighting – refrigeration – medical equipment
  • Retailers – lights – refrigeration – security
  • Farmers – lights – refrigeration – communication – security
  • Lodges – lights – refrigeration – communication – security – charging mobile devices
  • Gated communities’ silent electricity for – lights – charging mobile devices – TVs – fans etc..
  • Temporary construction sites – lights and security
  • Schools – lights – ventilation – internet
  • Island resorts – such as the ones off the Mozambique coast

The system has been designed from the ground up to be ultra-efficient. All components have been optimised in order to eliminate losses and optimise reliability.

Unlike diesel or petrol engine driven generators, the solar generator is designed to power certain selected appliances on a permanent basis, thereby lessening the demand on fossil fuels and resulting in a reduction to the carbon footprint.

Importantly there is no need to cart fuel over long distances.

It is silent and clean, appliances connected to it will last a lot longer, as the current supplied is free of brownouts, blackouts and spikes, which are known to have a detrimental effect on the longevity of electronic components.

The electronics and battery bank are stored in an all-weather container.  The PV panels are mounted over it by uprights which feature pre-set adjustments in order to seasonally adjust the solar angle, increasing the annual yield by over 12%.

Since it is to be sited at ground level, it is easy to give the PV panel a regular wipe, insuring that there are no additional losses suffered, due to dirt or accumulation of bird and insect droppings.

The pictured unit has had extensive R&D as well as ten years of daily use. The following units will be offered.

Entry level

  • Upright North facing with seasonal adjustment, single 450W PV panel with a conservative daily yield of 2.8kW after losses.
  • The components making up the units are from tier one manufacturers, the electronics are sourced from one of the largest international European concerns as are the batteries.
  • The PV panels carry twelve years warranty and 30 years performance warranty
  • The pure sine wave inverter is of 800vA and has a five year warranty as does the solar MPPT charger/regulator.  The GEL batteries were selected for their deep cycle ability and longevity, the initial system’s batteries remained functional beyond six years of daily use.

Note:

The GEL model range of batteries offers best deep cycle durability and overall longer life. The use of high purity materials and lead calcium grids ensure that for both AGM and GEL products have particularly low self-discharge so that they will not go flat during long periods without charge. Both ranges are supplied with M8 drilled, flat copper terminals ensuring best possible connection contact and eliminating the need for battery terminals. The batteries are compliant with both CE and UL specifications in ABS fireproof containers.

Such a unit is capable of powering a refrigerator/freezer unit and fan during the day, whilst generating sufficient excess energy to charge the batteries.

During the night, it will provide power for:

  • LED lights
  • TV
  • Set-top box
  • Internet router
  • Notebook
  • Security system
  • Charge mobile phones

Mid-range

  • 2 x PV panels of 450W, arranged in an east/west configuration
  • Daily yield of more than 5kvA and a 1 200vA pure sine wave inverter
  • Two battery options are available,
  • 2 x 110Ah batteries, which is the same as for the entry level
  • 2 x 220Ah batteries for double the duration or additional loads

SolarGen is there for anyone requiring an energy solution, to reliably provide power when the grid cannot.

  • Fossil fuel generators pollute SolarGen is clean
  • Fossil fuel generators need maintenance SolarGen is reliable and maintenance free
  • Fossil fuel generators are noisy SolarGen is silent
  • Fossil fuel generators are expensive to run SolarGen runs on the sunlight
  • SolarGen offers a clean energy solution, without the generator’s drawbacks
  • SolarGen can be locally assembled
  • SolarGen can be custom designed to meet specific requirements

The east/west configuration resembles a pitch roof over the galvanised box, which supports the
PV panels and houses the electronics and batteries.

Due to the fluctuating rate of exchange, the prices will have to be confirmed at time of order.

Example of a larger 5kW unit, which was made for a client in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.  This unit is powered by 6 PV panels and is used to power a school.

A pole mounted unit situated at Saint Antoine – Mauritius.
